There are 33 known burial places in our town. Our colonial ancestors placed human remains in what they called "burial grounds". It was only about the 1840s that the term "cemetery" began to be used. The change occurred as a result of the changing view of death.

Massachusetts State Law defines a cemetery as “an area of land set aside and dedicated for the final disposition of the remains of a deceased person”. Technically, a gravesite is a cemetery, as well as a place where cremains are placed.

Native American Burial Grounds: The land of Middleborough has been occupied for thousands of years. Laws are in place that detail the process for those occasions when human remains are discovered. Should you find human remains: Do not disturb the remains, and call both the State and Local Police. The Massachusetts Historical Commission give more information here.
