Learn how to document and clean Middleborough's gravestones with D/2 Biological Solution.

We are looking for volunteers to preserve gravestones with D/2 Biological Solution. On June 7th and June 8th, 2014, members of the Friends of Middleborough Cemeteries traveled to Rehoboth to a workshop held by the Rehoboth Cemetery Commission to learn how to "clean gravestones" from monument conservator Jonathan Appell. Our desire is to share these skills and apply them in all the cemeteries of Middleborough.

Since 2015, we have been sharing our knowledge freely, and providing all supplies. Join us!

The FoMC Preservation Team goes out during the warmer weather any day of the week, weather permitting.
Anyone interested in cleaning gravestones will receive an email with the date, time & location a few days in advance.

Middleborough has hundreds of slate and marble gravestones, dated from the early 1700's through the late 1800s. They are works of art that reflect our changing beliefs in life and death, as well as cultural artifacts that preserve the memory of earlier members of our community. All are priceless, irreplaceable , and under assault from lichens and molds. Those can be removed, thereby preserving the stones for future generations.
D/2 Biological Solution is the product most often used by the preservation community. It was designed to removes stains from mold, algae, mildew, lichens and air pollutants. In 2011, the National Center for Preservation Technology and Training (NCPTT) issued the results of a 6 year study on the subject of commercially available cleaners for removing biological growth from and general soiling from marble gravestones. As a result, the Veterans Administration uses biocidal cleaners, and not bleach-containing cleaners, for the regular maintenance of their 3 million+ marble gravestones. D/2 Biological Solution is the product used to keep the White House white, the Acropolis of Athens clean, and historic cemeteries planet-wide. Since D/2 Biological Solution has been deemed suitable for those sites, it is equally suitable for the monuments of  Middleborough.
