Cemeteries are man-made open spaces that are surrounded by and include the natural beauty that is Middleborough. Like our yards and our streets, and every other place made by mankind, cemeteries need to maintained so that nature does not reclaim them and deny us of their purpose.
Cemeteries need maintenance. They need to have their grass mowed. Left unchecked, grasses can grow tall enough that they can create tripping hazards from the cemetery's small headstones, foot stones, and field stones. They need to be watched for invasive plants, such as crawling vines, bittersweet, and poison ivy. They need to be watched for signs of bees and skunks. They need to have tree maintenance programs in place, as trees have been responsible for the destruction of most of Middleborough's damaged headstones. From a maintainance point of view, cemeteries need the same care as our own back yards. Cemeteries are filled with man-made items. Headstones become unreadable and unstable. Memorial markers shift. Veteran's flags fall. Fences become loose, rot, and rust. Roadways become undrivable, Stone walls collapse. Left unattended, the results can be tragic. The photos were all taken in Middleborough and are "before" photos (although the last one is showing a current condition). The hardest work has been done. We need landscaping teams to prevent "before" from becoming "again", by addressing the mowing and tree work that will always need to be done. |
